As with any athletic event, the expert level is reached by focused, deliberate practice. Warm –up daily with these exercises, and you will be cheering for a lifetime!

Exercise 1 (.wav 1.78MB)
This warm-up will help you extend your pitch range for cheering. Practice with the example by producing a voice siren from low to high-- first on an “ooo” and then on a “Yay!” In your practice keep trying to go lower and higher with each voice siren.
Exercise 2 (wav 690k)
This warm-up will help you produce a safe yell by keeping your throat open as if in silent laughing. The first sample is a constricted “Yay!” as in grunting. The second sample is an open “Yay!” as in laughing. Prepare for the open throat by inhaling as if you gasped for joy and then continue with the laugh posture for the entire “Yay!” |
Exercise 3 (.wav 1.1MB)
This exercise puts it all together and illustrates the difference between the risky, constricted cheer and the open, supported cheer. To produce the open cheer, anchor your body as in silent laughing or shivering, open your throat with a joyful inhale, and shout out a “Yay!” at a comfortable pitch. Make sure you are standing for this warm-up. Only listen to the constricted cheer, but practice the open cheer daily to prepare for the big game. |
